(posted 10/23/01) Movies like this are much harder to make than it looks. Films where a lot is happening are relatively easy to piece together: follow the action, build to the climax, shoot a lot of inserts. Hold people's attention the same way you'd hold a baby's: bright colors, motion, noise. day(s) is infinitely slow and studied, careful, and extremely hard to look away from. I saw it for the first time in a marathon day of about twenty short films in a row. I didn't want to pay attention, but I had to. The intentionality of it is stunning. Every element is measured, every composition precise, every frame of film necessary. In five short minutes, without a word, we feel as though we've spent the day with this guy, and we want to know him better. It's utterly concrete, and yet lyrical, in a subdued way. There aren't many people out there making films like this, and they're sure not getting paid to do it. Not in this day and age. But, Bryan, please make more movies. |
