Another entry for the Raging Film Nerd category, along with Henri Delluc (if I get one or two more that fit the same mold, that will become an actual gallery, just you wait), Mushrooms of the Afternoon is a shot-by-shot remake of the classic experimental film by Maya Deren, Meshes of the Afternoon, which is widely considered in and around film schools to be the film marking the birth of American avant-garde cinema.

While this may not be a credible sort of exercise for someone like, oh, say Gus van Sant to undertake, I think it's a great idea for a student film, a learning experience.  The mood of the whole thing, complete with haunting score, is extremely compelling and well paced.  The wry, pizza-goof element undercuts the darker tone nicely, without compromising the sense of the filmmaker's ultimate respect for the source of his material.
