(posted 10/23/01) If you don't know Kevin Roache or Rob Kerkovich, you will never appreciate this film as much as those of us who do. So much the worse for you. But, outside of all that, I think it has plenty of stand-alone merit. It's perfectly self-contained. It was shot in a single evening, as an assignment: make a complete film in two shots. It works on the strength of its actors and the characters they create, hallelujah. And, it goes to show how a simple design can be the framework for all kinds of bizarreness. No dutch angles or fancy effects here (well, okay, one); just a locked-down, square shot, a single light, and an actor. "A Taste of Doom" further convinces me that financial resources, in this day and age, are completely secondary to filmmaking. Give a couple of weird, talented kids a camera and a night to shoot something, and this is what they come back with. |
